Northeast Manual Training School/ Northeast High School / Edison High School / Julia De Burgos Middle School

In late 2011, I was able to photograph this gorgeous old school that had been abandoned for nearly a decade and suffered a four alarm fire just a few months before.

Located at 8th and Lehigh, the building, designed by Lloyd Titus opened in 1905 as the Northeast Manual Training School and was home to Northeast High School, Edison High School and Julia De Burgos Middle School before it closed its doors in 2002.

The auditorium was added in 1916 and many technical & career workshops were added in the 1930s.

The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

It caught on fire in 2011 and was finally demolished in 2013.

Some excellent history by my colleagues at Hidden City Philadelphia on the building as well as future development plans for the site can be found here.

Some of these images were featured in issue 19 of Megawords Magazine and in the Spring 2013 issue of Jacobin Magazine.
