For the past several months, I have been extensively documenting the Edward W. Bok Technical High School, located at 9th and Mifflin in South Philadelphia.
Bok Tech is one of a handful of the city’s remaining technical schools. I wrote about the history of the building and of technical education for Hidden City here.
This past April, the state-appointed School Reform Commission voted to close 22 schools, Bok is one of them.
Here are a few images from Bok’s gorgeous 1,000 seat Art Deco theater. The lower level was recently spruced up for Spare A Dime, COSA COSA’s contribution to the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts, which I covered for Hidden City here.
The balcony continues to suffer damage and portends what may lie ahead.
As Bok’s future remains unknown, so does the fate of this truly magnificent theater.
